Kawazu-zakura are famous as early-blooming cherry blossoms that begin flowering as early as February.
They were first discovered in 1955 in Kawazu Town on the Izu Peninsula and have gradually spread throughout Japan in recent years. Believed to be a natural hybrid of Oshima-zakura and Kanhi-zakura, these trees produce large, vibrant pink blossoms that create a striking display.
Another reason for their popularity is their long blooming period, allowing visitors to enjoy cherry blossom viewing earlier—and for longer—than with many other varieties. In 2026, Kawazu-zakura continue to attract many visitors looking for the first signs of spring.
Within Kyoto City, the only place where you can enjoy a row of Kawazu-zakura trees is along the Yodo Waterway.
The story began in 2002 when two Kawazu-zakura trees were planted by local residents along the waterway, following construction work to elevate Keihan Yodo Station.
In 2006, a volunteer group called the “Yodo Sakura Growing Association” was established to nurture the trees and expand the planting. Today, the area has grown into a beautiful row of about 200 Kawazu-zakura trees.
The site has become one of Fushimi’s most beloved signs of spring, drawing increasing numbers of visitors each year.
In some areas, bright yellow rapeseed flowers bloom beneath the cherry trees, creating a stunning contrast with the deep pink blossoms—an unforgettable spring landscape.
During peak bloom, Japanese white-eye birds (Mejiro) can also be spotted among the branches, their cheerful songs echoing along the waterway and announcing the arrival of spring.
Carefully nurtured by local residents, this growing cherry blossom spot has become one of Fushimi’s most charming seasonal attractions.
